UK Three Peaks Challenge The Roads
To get yourself and your team around this challenge, you will need some transport. Some people cycle, some run, and some even sail - but most will use a car or minibus. If you can't provide your own vehicle, check the links for Bongo Bus transport!
Please do not try to do both the driving and the climbing. Get a friend to drive you, and buy them a few pints at the end. If possible, get a support team to organise navigation, food, hot drinks, and dry kit for you.
Most teams find that starting in Scotland then heading south works out better logistically - but starting in Wales is still very possible - it just means a long drive home for most people.
Remember to organise some accommadation for your team, as the driving and climbing will exhause both the walkers and support guys/girls. A meal and celebratory drinks at the end would be welcomed by all!
THE ROUTE
There are quite a few variables to this route, and you should check for roadworks or closures before you set off. Merseyventure have produced a comprehensive guide to the Three Peaks Challenge driving route, which you can download and print off from here, but this is the bones of this 450 mile route:
Leave Fort William on A82 south to Erskine Bridge (now toll-free !) then M8 into Glasgow, M74 to A74, A7 into Carlisle. A595 to Gosforth, then minor roads to Wasdale Head. This section takes under 6 hours, including a 20 minute stop at Gretna Services (M74) for hot drinks, toilets and fuel.
Leave Wasdale on minor roads to A595 at Holmrook. South on A595 to join A590 out of the Lakes. Don't attempt Wrynose or Hardknott Pass short-cuts! Join M6 and head south to M56 into Wales. A55 coast road to Bangor, then A5 south, follow signs for Llanberis then A4086 south to drop team at Pen-y-Pass. Return down pass to Llanberis.
Parking is not available at Pen-y-Pass after about 10am on sunny weekend days :-( Parking at Llanberis by the station costs £4.

For help and advice with any logistic problems you may have, people carriers, minibuses, drivers, etc., please visit the 'Transport' page for some solutions from Merseyventure - who can collect your group at Glasgow Airport, and drop you off at the end of your challenge. Early booking for the minibuses and minicoaches is very much recommended. Vehicles come with a driver.
